Help train veterans to provide disaster response.

After fighting two wars abroad, America's newest generation of veterans are returning home to a range of issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), survivor's guilt, depression and suicide. Despite years of training and experience, vets must also contend with higher-than-average unemployment rates, making it difficult to find a sense of purpose or community during their transition back into a civilian lifestyle.

Rather than focusing on vocational training that attempts to teach new job skills, Team Rubicon repurposes veterans' existing skills—emergency medicine, risk assessment and mitigation, teamwork and decisive leadership—to solve another need: more effective disaster response.

Following each disaster, people around the globe rally to donate money, food and supplies, but organizations don't always have the volunteers or expertise to put these resources into action. Since natural disasters present many of the same complications as a combat zone, such as unstable populations and limited resources, Team Rubicon steps into this vacuum, uniting military veterans with experienced medical professionals to provide targeted and effective first response in crisis situations.

Through Team Rubicon's Clay Hunt Fellowship, veterans receive training in business and nonprofit administration while applying their specialized skills to help others in need. Upon completion of the program, these vets leave equipped with the tools to secure meaningful employment or to seek further education. Your donation simultaneously addresses two distinct problems, providing disaster relief and veteran support.

While Team Rubicon was surveying flooded neighborhoods with a damage assessment team in South Carolina, they encountered a member of the public who asked, "Why do you do it?"

"Many things come to mind. As a child raised in a family whose father was a 23-year Air Force veteran and a mother who worked as a civilian on government contracts, seeing the camaraderie among former/current soldiers and sailors, the coordinated response to a call to duty, assisting those in need, and receiving a heartfelt, 'Thank you' come to mind."

-Maurice Grant, TR Volunteer

Update from the Field

In 2017, Team Rubicon volunteers responded to 64 operations around the globe, deploying 4,267 volunteers who spent 217,745 hours in the field, resulting in $6,440,000 worth of volunteer labor. That labor directly impacted more than 2,106 families affected by disaster. Team Rubicon’s response to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria resulted in our organization’s largest operation to date. Following these events, Field Operations added services including water boat rescue and mold remediation. Operation: Shallow Draft was a search and rescue operation in which TR volunteers rescued 72 people and 54 animal survivors after Hurricane Harvey.

In 2018 thus far, Team Rubicon has conducted 16 operations throughout the country and abroad. Seven of our operations were in response to Type 5 disasters, six were Type 4 disasters, two were Type 3 disasters, and one was a Type 2 disaster. Team Rubicon volunteers have served over 7,000 hours, totaling almost $135,000 in volunteer labor donated, and have completed 49 work orders for families in need.

Team Rubicon's primary mission is to provide disaster relief between the moment a disaster happens and the point at which conventional aid organizations respond. This "gap" is the crucial window following a disaster when victims have traditionally been without outside aid. Since its creation in January 2010, Team Rubicon has impacted thousands of lives — in Haiti, Chile, Burma, Pakistan, Sudan, and here at home, in Vermont, Maryland, Missouri, and Alabama, reaching victims outside the scope of traditional aid organizations.
